We said goodbye to Ambergris Caye and headed up to the Cayo District and stayed at DuPlooys Lodge near San Ignacio. DuPlooys can only be described as "remote luxury". It sits in the jungle on a hillside above the Mecal River. The accomodations, while not cheap, are very clean and comfortable. They consist of various bungalows and a house which can be rented . The botanical garden on the grounds is there pride and joy. Since they are on a generator the electricity goes off at 10 p.m. I had not seen "lightning bugs" since I was a kid. The jungle there is full of them. Anything you want to do, they will handle it for you-canoing, horseback riding, caving, whatever. A few years ago DuPlooys ran a contest on the Internet. The first to arrive at the lodge with a gallon of Ben and Jerry's got a weeks stay for free.
